Blur a page before you share your screen

PlainBlur is a Chrome extension. This page describes how to blur parts of a page before a demo, a call, or a recording. Back to PlainBlur.

What does blurring before a screen share mean?

A blur covers part of the page in the browser, so that part is harder to read while the screen is shared. The values are still on the page. PlainBlur does not delete them. It is a best-effort visual aid, not a privacy or compliance guarantee.

How do you blur an element or an area?

  1. Install PlainBlur from the Chrome Web Store. Pin it if you want it in the toolbar.
  2. Open the popup. Choose Blur an element, then click what should be covered. Or choose Blur an area and drag a rectangle.
  3. Share the screen, or record that browser window. The blur is drawn on the page, so the capture shows the blur. PlainBlur does not edit the video file afterward.
  4. Choose Hide blurs when you need the page clear. Choose it again to show the blurs.

Alt+Shift+E picks an element. Alt+Shift+A drags an area. Alt+Shift+B shows or hides blurs.

Will the blur still be there after a reload?

Manual blur is kept for the first site on the free plan, and for every site on Pro and Team. Kept blurs come back after a reload if you have chosen Remember this site, or Remember every site. Until you allow that, use the popup or a shortcut on the visit you are presenting. Chrome asks before a site is remembered. You can revoke that permission in Chrome’s extension settings.

Does PlainBlur upload the page?

No. Blurring happens in this browser. Page content is not uploaded to the license server or to plainblur.com. Saved blurs stay in this browser.

What should you check before you present?

Look at the page with the blurs on. PlainBlur can miss text, images, canvases, and iframes. Text inside a picture is not read; drag an area over it if it should be covered. A short flash of the unblurred page is possible before a blur is applied.

Which plan covers more than one site?

Free is $0. Manual blur is kept for the first site you blur. On another site, a manual blur lasts for that visit and is not kept. Pro is $49, paid once, for one seat. It keeps manual blur on every site and adds auto-blur. Team is $99, paid once, for five seats, with the same blurs as Pro. A seat is one browser. Remove it in the popup to free it. There is no subscription and no team admin console. Checkout starts from the extension popup. This website does not take payment.

For emails, phone numbers, and keys on an admin page, see hide emails and keys on a demo.
